The European Scale-up Monitor 2020 is a report by Erasmus University, in collaboration with international partners, that studies the scale-up landscape in Europe. European scale-ups, also known as fast-growing companies, play a vital role in the economic landscape of Europe, contributing to economic growth, job creation and innovation.

As Martin Luxemburg, Managing Director of the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship says in the preface of the report:

“Scale-ups have never been more important for the European economy than today. On the verge of a new decade, Europe is facing unprecedented challenges, ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic crisis it brought about, to the threats of climate change. Now more than ever, we need innovative fast-growing companies help us find effective and sustainable solutions to such problems and shape the economy of our future”.

In this first edition of European Scale-up Monitor the reader is given a glance into the dynamic European business climate for scale-ups. Attention is paid to scale-ups, funding schemes, internationalisation strategy, markets they operate, but also to assets of their founding teams.

Findings: smaller countries can have a big piece of the pie too


Smaller countries can have a big piece of the pie too. Despite their relatively smaller size in terms of population, the Dutch and the Swedish scale-up ecosystems stand out
in the list. Sweden scores 4th in the top 20 Scale-up countries and its capital Stockholm is the 3rd in the Top 20 Scale-up Cities. Respectively, the Netherlands occupies position 7 and Amsterdam position 8.
